Ceramic Dishes

Using blue and white glazes in ceramics carries strong connotations of the history of Chinese ceramics when the color blue went from scarcity during the Tang dynasty (618-907) to popularity of its use during the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368). Although our dish designs appear as mere studies of the motifs that characterize Chinese ceramics, our greater agenda was the personalization of this historically influential art form. Art students from 6th to 8th grade researched, brainstormed, and sketched their ideas while preparing for the glazing process. Some ideas took shape through an intentionally observational approach while other designs developed into a unique experiment of unhindered drawing techniques. The circular format was used to bring together a highly diverse set of ideas and a range of techniques into a visually cohesive display. The circle is a shape that creates focus and symbolically represents unity, oneness, and harmony.

Created in collaboration with Mr. Victor Fung. Made with clay, glaze, and glazing markers.
